The following is a statement from Pierre Bois d’Enghien, co-host of Palm Oil Monitor, agronomist and environmental expert, on UK Lord Randall and WWF’s comments in The Times UK that Indonesia has weakened their rules on protecting forests since the UK Government has proposed its Due Diligence.
“Lord Randall and his followers at WWF & Fauna & Flora International are scaremongering when they claim the UK approach will weaken protection of forests in developing countries. This is false, this fear never materialized, and in doing so, he has personally attacked Indonesia. Indonesia, a world leader in sustainable palm oil, has strengthened, not weakened, its forest protection laws, including a moratorium on forest and palm oil development. Deforestation in Indonesia is at an all-time low. The current approach by the Boris Johnson Government on Due Diligence is sensible: protecting the environment, strengthening the tools to combat climate change and supporting the UN Sustainable Development Goals. Lord Randall is undermining this progress by proposing adversarial rules on Due Diligence that will alienate the UK’s trading partners.”
